Great article Spencer! This article reminds me of the debate generated when Adobe revealed its excellent prototype for human voice manipulation that can generate speech through a very small set of voice recordings (See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3l4XLZ59iw ).
The potential nefarious repercussions of such technologies are huge.I also believe that Facebook has been mainly exploring cost conscious decisions (easy to scale and mainly requiring technology) to create its fact checking, whereas it could benefit from collaborating from international news agencies or create its own parallel structure to have an opinion on the veracity of information quickly.
Great article @EmperorOfJapan! One additional area that the article/algorithms mentioned do not identity is the ability of improving the experience of a customer by providing them food options that they are “most likely to enjoy”. This can definitely be done by combining multiple data sets (e.g., typical target customers for restaurant, customers background/order pattern, etc.).
Thank you for sharing these great thoughts!
Great article Daichi. I really like the clarity regarding the future of GE’s Additive Manufacturing efforts. I personally feel that GE will probably divest from that business given that there are several startups whose only focus is to push the envelop on 3d printing (Formlabs, MakerBot, etc.) in contrast with GE whose ongoing crisis will probably mean less focus on R&D – which this area really needs!
Although I definitely see the potential of applying AI to VC to attempt to predict success, it is important to understand that it is an ambitious task to automate the whole investment process whose success factors might be difficult to attribute. Additional idiosyncrasies (geography, product, timing, team dynamics) relating to each startup only amplify this and therefore it might be hard for AI to capture these factors.
I guess the true test relies in the final performance of the fund after certain investments have been exited – so we shall wait and see! (unrealized gains which are mentioned in the article can potentially be highly inflated especially in today’s startup market)
Great article. Regarding your open question 1, I believe that this can potentially lead to future concerns over the Intellectual Rights for designs as this model starts eating away from the role of the interior designer.
On the one hand, as this AI technology progresses, it is conceivable that AI could be able to replace the designers all together – which the designers should try to avoid.
