Great piece! I agree with earlier comments that the net impact on both Whirlpool and American consumers will most likely be negative. For Whirlpool- they will have a new domestic competitor to deal with when the new Samsung plant is completed. If Whirlpool is not able to improve its operations- protectionist policies are not going to help them. The American consumer who previously benefited from cheaper products from abroad will now have to choose among expensive products produced in the USA.

Great piece! Interesting to see how real and how fast the effects of Brexit are being felt. I agree that increasing prices is not a sustainable strategy in the long run. Firms like Smurfit Kappa will have clearer outlook as soon as the Brexit talks are finalized and new trade agreements are signed – in the mean time the end consumer is going to continue absorbing the costs.

Great piece! I agree with Mike that Bunge finds itself in a tough place given that it is both affected by climate change and also contributes to climate change. What I would like to find out though is how their efforts to mitigate their impact on the environment are affecting their competitiveness. Have their products become more expensive or by taking care of the environment have they been able to realize some gains in efficiency and lowered their costs?

Great piece! Interesting trend – bringing manufacturing back to developed countries. I wonder whether this is going to mean the end of low cost manufacturing in developing countries – it would be great to find out how fast 3D printing is bringing manufacturing costs down in the developed world and if it poses a real threat to manufacturers in developing countries.

Mistake: I just realized that you touched on both issues that I mentioned in my comment (my bad)- So I am optimistic that Zipline could make a difference in healthcare in East Africa provided they continue improving on some of the issues that you have highlighted.

Great piece! However when you say the cost of drone deliveries is at parity with that of trucks – is that on each delivery? Or is it per unit of delivery? Also is there any information on the distance between the points of delivery? Because I can imagine this may not work as well in country bigger than Rwanda where the distances may be much longer.

I think it would be helpful to understand the impact coal has on the general health of the people who live close to the mines. If we are able to understand the number of people affected and how they are affected i.e. the extent of new asthma cases, black lung e.t.c we shall be in a better position to quantify the environmental impact coal has on society. In this case for example it would help us understand how much more Colombia has to spend on healthcare due to an operational coal mine. We can then compare that to the benefits of coal.
