How Instagram Keeps Users Scrolling For More

Instagram is using data analytics to keep us scrolling – but at what cost?

Instagram has clearly engrained itself as a part of modern culture and that can in large part be attributed to its use of data analytics keeping users on the app and continuing to scroll.

Instagram users across the globe have grown exponentially since Instagram’s founding in 2010, reaching over 1 billion monthly average users in December 2020[1] and Instagram has been downloaded by over 35% of the US population[1].

The Instagram app is organized into personalized feeds, the Explore page, and targeted advertising and data analytics is present across all three.

If you have an Instagram account, you might follow hundreds of accounts, but you won’t see all of their posts on your feed. Instagram uses a proprietary algorithm to personalize your feed to your unique usage patterns. Even if you follow the exact same accounts as a friend, your feed will show you different posts based on how you interact with those accounts[2]. Instagram uses a unique combination of who you follow, how long you spend on Instagram, and how you react (eg., like, comment, share) to similar posts to decide what you see in your feed. While users have expressed frustration that the feed no longer follows a chronological order, there is an aspect of unknown that is created by the personalized feed that keeps users coming back for more.

A quick look through the Explore page might have you questioning how Instagram knows you as well as it does. The platform uses machine learning to use “word embedding” to determine how related two accounts are to each other[3]. Then, it identifies “seed accounts” that you interact with the most[3]. By putting the two together, Instagram determines what is shown on your Explore page. The Explore page acts as a way to keep users on the app because they are curating the exact content that you want to see.

Like most social media platforms, Instagram sells ads. However, on Instagram they might seem more targeted than most. That is because Instagram is collecting an immeasurable amount of data on you – from what you look at and how long you look at it for to when and where you were looking at it[4]. This has allowed Instagram to be incredibly targeted with their use of advertising and earned $20B of revenue in 2019[5].

There are a few ways Instagram is using big data in a more altruistic way – which debatably is self-serving as yet another way to keep you on the platform, or said differently to keep you from wanting to leave the platform. Instagram uses AI to help filter out spam messages to keep its users safe and their accounts secure[6]. Instagram has tried to target bullying and offensive language by using AI to read users posts and alert them when their posts may be perceived as offensive based on past reports[6].

One area where we will certainly see data and social media converge is in its handling of misinformation. Currently, there are still huge open questions as to how social media sites will be able to deal with misinformation in a sustainable and fair way. Recent political and societal events, along with the continued global pandemic, continue to bring this to the forefront as a significant issue.

While Instagram’s use of big data has certainly kept users on the platform, it’s worth considering the ethical implications – is continued scrolling a good thing? Most recent research into mental health would strongly suggest the opposite. In a 2018 British study, of 1000 young adults surveyed, 41% of them disclosed social media mad them feel anxious, sad or depressed[7]. Social media sites like Instagram are designed for users to post a curated highlight reel of their life, which likely is out of touch with reality, and drives a culture of “FOMO” (i.e. fear of missing out) among viewers of their photos[8]. Such FOMO leads to the anxiety, sadness and depression cited in the British study. Tragically, the leading cause of death among pre-teens is suicide[9]. While a causal link between the rise in pre-teen suicide and social media use has not been fully validated, it is impossible to ignore the positive correlation between the rise in pre-teen suicide and the rise of social media use. Because of this, a new term has emerged – “doomscrolling” – which highlights the negative reinforcement that scrolling through social media can have on our brains[10]. Doomscrolling was recently added as a word to Merriam-Webster’s “Words We’re Watching” list, suggesting the phenomenon is here to stay[11].

  1. It certainly feels like social media is potentially on track with a dramatic change in the amount of freedom companies have to operate. It would be interesting to understand the actions Instagram may be able to take proactively to preempt more sweeping legislation changes to the amount of data they collect and use. In particular, it seems as though Instagram should think through the worst case scenario of a “minimum viable product” for their data collection and plan out how their business model would need to flex in response to demands for privacy from the world.

  2. Julia this was a [Insert Fire Emoji Here] blog post! As a total Instagram addict, I was always curious about how the app worked.

    In terms of the ethical implication of the impacts of social media on mental health, I totally agree that there have been negative consequence. However, I also recognize the positives, in terms of people’s ability to stay in touch/keep up with lots of people’s (admittedly deeply curated) lives. Furthermore, the targeted advertising can also do A LOT of good. To provide one personal example, I’ve been dealing with chronic back pain since 2013 and more or less gave up on every healing. Then one day Instagram, through targeted advertising, marketing Laser assisted spinal decompression therapy which has helped me live with less pain. I am grateful for the data collection and targeted advertising. On the other hand, I also ordered a pull up bar off Instagram adverts which turned out to be a total scam. I think Instagram needs to vet their advertisers more closely to protect their customers as that experience has resulted in me NEVER purchasing off Instagram again. I see an advert for a product I like, then try to find a safer/more reliable source like amazon.

    I see Instagram, and social media more broadly a lot like the fossil fuel industry. Using fossil fuels has done immeasurable good for humanity, however, the unchecked externalities can no longer be ignored with climate change. I really appreciate the addition of this section because it’s a conversation that needs to be had!

  3. Hi Julia, awesome post! Two thoughts:

    1) I would be curious on your perspective around whether you think Instagram should OR will give users more control about what they are shown. Based on your blog, right now it seems like our scrolling actions go into a black box and ads pop up accordingly. It would be interesting if users were given some control (i.e. I want to see more of or less of)

    2) Given TikTok is winng with Gen Z and younger, how can Instagram ensure they are getting enough data from these groups to improve their product for future users/different cohorts?

    I’d be very curious to hear if you know anything on how Instagram is dealing with misinformation – do they follow the same strategy adopted by Facebook?

    I just saw news that Facebook is currently working on a version of Instagram exclusive for kids under 13.
    I suppose they’re trying to create a more safe environment for kids, but it certainly does not solve the mental health implications that you mentioned. Perhaps it can make the problem even worse.

    On the misinformation piece, a more general concern I have is with the power, or more precisely, with the limitations of the power of AI for content moderation. Ethical considerations aside, even if we had the perfect moral compass to judge content, there is still the challenge of nuances of language and images and their context. Now if we also take into account ethical nuances and cultural differences, the problem that was already complex now becomes what some may say impossible to solve. Can AI solve content moderation and all its complexities?

  7. Julia, this is amazing. As the Instagram algorithm designing the feed and the explore page gets more complex it becomes harder to understand how to get the page to cater to you. The fact that chronology has been eliminated from the feed is a particularly disturbing bit.
    Post The Social Dilemma the understanding of the internet has changed and now people realize more acutely what internet companies are geared towards.
    The fact that Instagram now lets accounts market products within their posts just like tagging people is another disturbing element. this let’s accounts market to users by targeting them. This is one of the most disturbing parts of it.

    Lots of questions come to mind, but most have already been discussed. I guess, the one thought that most lingers in my mind after your post and that hasn’t been addressed is what is next for Instagram, seems like they are already at the top of their game. How can they stay competitive as upstarts like TikTok come to compete? Are new data applications the way to stay dominant or is it some form of socially responsible self regulation maybe? Is it even more hyper targeted advertising? What is next for Instagram?

  9. Facebooks APIs are superior to most other social networks for partner reporting / big data. Do you think this influences there user base dramatically and contributes to the cycle?
