This is just amazing. I’ve read the post while I listened to one of the Endel songs and that felt great. It’s so exciting to see those being generated by algorithms. With enough user feedback and so many data points, I imagine this becoming the best personal composer any person can have, at least for people who enjoy ambient songs.

This is really fascinating! Interesting to see their overarching approach for recommendations: collaborative filtering (Netflix-like) + elements of the songs (Pandora/Music Genome) + Labeling songs using NLP on web content (which is a smart way to scale!).

Very interesting post! Besides helping with product recommendations, I wonder how these images/videos from customers could also provide IKEA with design/product insights or even help the company to understand market trends.

Very interesting, Bruno.

I’m also curious to know how Nubank innovates on their credit risk models, in case you’re willing to share this information with a competitor. =P

Very interesting post, Julia.

Just saw in their website that they have a subscription model. It’s impressive how valuable it is to have this ongoing relationship with customers. Being able to collect further data, from sources other than their DNA, and having them paying you at the same time.

Awesome blog post!

I just saw news that Facebook is currently working on a version of Instagram exclusive for kids under 13.
I suppose they’re trying to create a more safe environment for kids, but it certainly does not solve the mental health implications that you mentioned. Perhaps it can make the problem even worse.

This is great, Omar. Your post is very well-written and fun to read! I wonder if there’s a way these platforms could use all this data to actually help people to find lasting romantic partners. There must be many insights about matching characteristics and personalities that might help people to find a soul mate in the platform. But, as Bruno said in an early comment, this is not in the best interest of the company, at least not as long as Tinder has this business model.

On March 2, 2021, Marcos commented on Bumble: Monetizing Empowerment :

Thanks for this post, Vikram. It was very interesting to see how Bumble was able to innovate and challenge Tinder’s hegemony by solving one of the pain-points women experienced on Tinder. It’s a great example on how to compete with already established platforms.

On March 2, 2021, Marcos commented on OnlyFans: Revolutionizing the Online Sex Industry? :

Very interesting, Karl. I’ve recently read news about the fact that Twitter will allow its users to charge their followers for additional content. I wonder if this recent feature was motivated by the success of OnlyFans, given that Twitter is also used by some members as a platform to share and follow erotic content.

On February 10, 2021, Marcos commented on Udemy: Taking Advantage of a New Normal :

Very interesting. Indeed, Udemy seems very well positioned in the industry and prepared to deal with the pandemic impacts. A business model that allows anybody to be a student or a teacher, anywhere, is a powerful way to democratize education and has the potential of disrupting the entire industry.

On February 10, 2021, Marcos commented on Color: a unicorn born amidst the COVID-19 pandemic :

Very interesting post. Nice to see how quickly Color turned into solving the COVID testing problem by leveraging their existing capabilities. I wonder how easier and more natural this move was for them to make, than it was for an incumbent lab which already detains high expertise in testing operations, but lacks the needed digital capabilities.

Very interesting story! To be honest, I found it quite surprising the fact that there wasn’t a mobile-first tool available to help Renato and Veronica to go digital. Developing an easy-to-use and accessible mobile app that solves this problem might prove to be a very promising business opportunity.
