Defining the Future of Business with AI
The Frontier Firm AI Initiative is a shared effort between D^3 and Microsoft to study how real organizations are embedding AI into their strategy and operations, transforming how they create value.
Together with a group of forward-looking companies, we’re exploring the frontier of AI-native business, not by declaring who’s ahead, but by uncovering what works, why it works, and how leaders everywhere can learn from it.
Applied Research
Through field-based experiments with global companies, Harvard Business School faculty are studying how AI transforms work and performance. The research focuses on five areas—from human-AI collaboration and “agent boss” management models to AI-native startups and shifting skill demands—to build evidence-based blueprints for how organizations can thrive as Frontier Firms.
Upskilling for Global C-Suite Leaders
Custom workshops turn research insights into action. Executives from participating companies gain practical guidance to reinvent operations, reimagine work patterns, and close the gap between AI ambition and performance.
The goal: Equip leaders to drive real transformation, not just pilot projects.
New Mindsets, Toolsets, and Skillsets
The Initiative challenges old assumptions about how work gets done. By combining applied research with hands-on learning, it helps organizations adopt the mindsets, tools, and capabilities needed to lead in an AI-driven world—putting human-AI collaboration at the core of strategy and culture.
