I would have never considered this application of 3-D printing! Do you know where I can find a sample (for a friend, of course)?
I have a few questions about entering the recipe into the machine. How accurate can the machine measure specific ingredient, and how thoroughly can the chef interact with adjusting the machine’s output to make sure that the finished product is of good quality? Also, do you think Hershey has considered introducing other chocolate variations to this project?
Great post!
Aparna, this is a really great example of open innovation! I was left with a few thoughts. I think crowdsourcing for fashion grants Betabrand great access to unique designers with great perspectives. I would also echo the concern about whether the incentive is enough to attract promising designers. Are there other avenues that are more appealing to these new designers?
For the designs that are submitted to Betabrand, is there a protocol for the designs of new designers that gain traction? Does the designer still own that design?
I think this is a really cool concept. Disney is a company that has branded itself around “magic” and creativity, so the use of an algorithm to predict their customer demand is interesting. I agree with one of the earlier comments that pondered how well the data scientists that will oversee the AI and the more artistic employees will interact. How well can the AI mimic the intuition of an individual who has a knack for seeing where the next big trends will go? I think this would create a really interesting dynamic within Disney, but I think that this application does open up “A Whole New World” of possibility!
I think this is a great application of machine learning! I think the species that PAWS could help preserve is more than enough reason to invest more into it. With this being a time-sensitive issue, I wonder how quick is the turnaround time for improvement iterations of the algorithm.
Also, what preventative measures should conservationists put in place to make sure that poachers cannot reverse engineer this tool for their needs?
This is such a cool concept, Rim! I think this is an amazing way for fashion houses to possibly disrupt the disrupters (fast fashion brands like H&M or Zara). Having the ability to customize the clothing is another way to keep fashion dynamic. I would love a clothing-printing machine in my home!
I also really enjoy the viewpoint that 3D printing in fashion is simply a change in medium for this art form.
This was mentioned in an earlier comment, but I am also curious to know how this use of technology would allow others to replicate or counterfeit these designs.
