I am fully in support of telemedicine and the benefits it can provide to society! However, I think the biggest issues stem from government regulation and data security issues. The government has strict patient privacy data regulations, rightfully so, but this stifles technological development. The difficulty of such companies to grow quickly means they get less funding, which leads to even less development in the space.
I think there will always be a need for doctors. A large part of a doctor’s job is get at the “real” information. We as patients sometimes can’t fully understand our pains or issues. I don’t think there is a series of questions and answers that could replace the human element of discovery. But I am in support of using technology to help reduce managerial tasks doctors are tasked with!
The Starbucks app has been a huge lifesaver! The addictive nature of coffee and the frequency with which I drink coffee means I am willing to do anything to optimize the experience. The features are easy to use and the app is well tailored to its core customer base. It was brilliant for them to move their “Starbucks reward cards” to the app – I now load up my card and will sometimes forget I have money there.
Growing up in CA, Disneyland has played a huge part in my life! I’ve loved their ability to use data to improve the Disney experience. Using magic bands isn’t too intrusive (or Big Brother-like) because it’s essentially like using a smartphone application that activates when you enter the park. Would love to see how they incorporate more advanced technology – maybe instead of humans in costumes we’play be able to use AI robots!
Great post! Although it did make me very hungry….
A lot of protein, beef in particular, is known for consuming more water vs. the nutrients it provides. If Impossible Foods can make this work, it would be amazing, for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Other companies are also trying to tackle this problem from a different perspective – using cricket flour! Crickets are protein packed but require very little water to grow. I’ve tried a Chapul bar (http://www.chapul.com/) and it wasn’t bad.
The airlines space is a really interesting industry! Aviation is very relevant to climate change given both the consumption of fuel and carbon emissions. However, is Boeing the best positioned to lead the charge. Given the issues they faced immediately after the launch of the Dreamliner (battery problems) and lost/crashed flights, the company is under a lot of of pressure. How should they prioritize these business issues / PR issues with their focus on climate change?
SO many interesting facts! First, I love your personal pictures (I would love to learn how to scuba dive and then go with you sometime). Second, I had no idea scuba diving was a $30B industry – that’s much larger than I would have expected! It’s incredibly import to protect the biodiversity of our coral reefs – could the company do more to build awareness among the general population (rather than just their customers)?
Super interesting! Climate change most directly and severely impacts the farming community. My grandmother actually owns land in India, which is used to grow bananas. She has noticed issues with production over the last 5-10 years (vs. when she was growing up and her parents ran the land, production was relatively consistent). This irregularity stems from bouts of drought or excessive rain, and mismanagement of the water collection system in the village. This then also leads to irregularity of income.
Awesome post to read – especially relevant as I am currently drinking an almond milk smoothie! I lived in CA, and the state is incessant in its messaging around water conservation. However, I solely focused on direct water consumption (turn the faucet off while brushing my teeth, water the lawn less, etc.). I never took the time to think about how much water is consumed to process the food I eat. I would love to get a better understanding of:
– Regular milk vs. alternatives (for those who can consume lactose) – health contributions vs. resource consumption to produce
– Resource consumption to produce various milk alternatives – soy, almond, coconut, lactaid
Glad to see WhiteWave is conscious of the issue!
