The Guardian – how to be a winner in a declining industry

The Guardian has survived one of the biggest industry declines, to become a more relevant newspaper in a digital world. They have beaten their traditional newspaper rivals through the adoption of 'Open Journalism' and digital media – putting their readers at the heart of the company.

The more traditional companies in the media industry have notoriously suffered from the rise of digital media and content. Information is increasingly accessible, timely and most importantly – FREE. As a result, large and long-standing printed newspapers are losing readers and revenue from decreased circulation. Determined to stay alive in this new environment where consumer demand and expectations have changed, only those willing to adapt and fight will survive.

 

The Guardian newspaper is a prime example of a company who has embraced the digital revolution, and in my opinion is one of the winners of the traditional media giants. To ensure their newspaper stayed relevant in the digital age, UK’s The Guardian adopted a more open style of reporting – coining the phrase ‘Open Journalism’. For them, the future of journalism is where digital, print, and social media sources are all intertwined to create “the whole picture,” resulting in better content. Open Journalism is only possible because the evolving digital landscape and increased mobile Internet access, where everyone can be an on-the-scene reporter. Former Editor-in-Chief, Alan Rusbridger, stated that a newspaper’s new role is one of a curator or moderator of information, shared across multiple platforms. He believes that journalists are not the only experts, and more data leads to better informed stories. This is shift from a traditional media relationship of broadcasting news from one central site, out to the mass population. The Guardian encourages its readers to get involved by:

The Guardian themselves admit that if they weren’t digitally open they would be falling behind their rivals. Putting readers at the heart of their content helps them to break the biggest stories – proven through them winning the editorial Pulitzer Prize for their unrivaled coverage of the Edward Snowden NSA leaks. Additional benefits of moving to digital and being open is increased readership engagement and article archives. Articles are stored online, and through the newly opened 2-way conversation, journalists can ask readers what type of topics do they want to hear more about – tailoring content to their readers demands.

 

The outcome has been great, with Business Insider ranking The Guardian as number 1 in terms of reputation across all UK newspapers, stating that it is in ‘Fantastic Health’ due to its adoption of digital. The Guardian has been called a pioneer in online media, launching its first mobile app in 2009, becoming one of the first publishers to launch on Google Glass, and opening an in-house digital studio which relies on continuous improvement through test and learn.

 

Being a first-mover in digital has paid dividends. From a financial perspective, The Guardian’s digital revenues grew by 24% to £69.5 million over 12 months, ending March 2014 – the fastest growing in the industry. It has also seen increased revenues via subscriptions in the form of its Membership Scheme, where it is asking readers to pay anything between £15 to £60 a month for access to live events and entry into a new Guardian Space venue. On top of this, Print revenues remained flat in the 12 months to the end of March 2014 — a strong performance in a market suffering terminal declines.  Proof, that The Guardian thinks this winning ‘Open Journalism’  approach will continue to work globally, the company has recently opened up offices in the US and Australia.   1. Really interesting post! Indeed, I think it’s great that The Guardian has found a way to use digital to actually build a community and provide some additional value. I’m very skeptical about monetization of pure information because, as you say, there is so much information available for free. Being able to boost ad revenue by boosting reader engagement and driving traffic to the site seems like a more effective long-term strategy than monetized subscriptions, which can be circumvented or are simply unattractive to readers who choose to go elsewhere for their news. I do, however, wonder whether it would be particularly difficult for other publications to follow suit. Even if The Guardian has created a community and really integrated readers into its content generation, I’m not sure that there is much lock-in in this situation, i.e. that readers wouldn’t participate just as actively on another publication’s platform, or migrate to another news source if provided with similar features. While I think people do have favorite publications that they tend to consult regularly, I think we’re becoming increasingly less loyal and will consume content from a number of different sources. So I’m curious to see how The Guardian would react to other players using digital more wisely. I would also be curious to see what other ideas they develop to monetize additional services. Live events are an interesting idea, but I’d like to see how they can push this further!

The Guardian also deserves credit for its role in promoting data journalism (Guardian gives readers access to the datasets underlying its articles) and for educating its readers on data analysis and visualization (http://www.theguardian.com/news/series/facts-are-sacred). As we move into a world with more and more data becoming public, Guardian’s investment in its ability to tell stories from data will likely become a great asset.

  3. I have been a long time reader of Guardian & I completely agree that Guardian has done an outstanding job of embracing new media. They have one of the best websites and mobile apps around. The thing is that I am not sure if the new media are profitable for Guardian. In other words, they have created a lot of value but they are still unable to capture a proportionate and fair share.

    An interesting industry development is the impending release of Apple News. Apple may yet turn out to be the savior that the news industry is looking for.

  4. Very interesting and well-documented post. As much as I understand the need for modern journalism to reinvent itself in order to remain profitable, I can’t help but believing that it is indeed a job, which requires professionalism and expertise, to be a newspaper journalist. I see a dichotomy between purely informational news, which I agree are now available through an ever increasing number of channels and which cannot anymore constitute the added value of a respectable newspaper like The Guardian. However, The Guardian would remain competitive by providing in-depth investigations and political analyses, in line with its traditional political positioning, publishing demanding intellectual and political reflexions by professional journalists that would contribute to the enrichment of the public debate in the UK, in the West and in the world. That way, it would also remain relevant for our political societies…
