Yes, I agree with you Max. I am not sure of details as they are not fully public. But at my last company I did a pilot of Stylumia. From what I saw, the data flow from customer to the company is local. So Stylumia analyses public data and generates insights. These are then merged with customer’s data separately to create customized recommendations. I hope that answers your question in some way.

Thanks for your comment Tiffany. For the designers, Stylumia offers a product that helps them create design features and then test them vs the current trends. So it brings some structure to creativity. On the privacy side, it is indeed a complicated issue. As far as I know, the company currently maintains that they do not share data across customers and use only publicly available data. But that also curtails their ability to generate better insights.

Great blog post Tiffany! I loved learning about Blue River technology and feel that this could be a game changer for agriculture. I can also see the added benefit of reduced chemicals on edible portions of crop. Do you have any insights if the company is planning to expand to other countries – more specifically developing countries? It will be very useful for farmers who do not struggle with high cost of fertilizers.

A very fascinating application of AI indeed! I am curious to know if using a machine to write an article would venture into the area of plagiarism as the machine would be using existing data to learn how to write (could be a possibility of lifting phrases directly). But I agree that the applications are wide – especially for those with disabilities. Thank you for the post.

Thank you for the very informative post Stephane. I am curious to know if Spotify also collects user data from the browser – ie, other websites such as Youtube to improve its understanding of customer preferences?

Thank you for the insightful post. I am curious to know if Nike’s strategy going forward is focused mainly on online sales vs offline sales in past? Seems like they are trying to engage customers via various apps but are they also leveraging data to improve offline experience?

Great post Max! Very informative. I did not know that Starbucks is actively monitoring the weather information to make product decisions. I would like to know if you think that data is giving Starbucks any sustained competitive advantage?

Great post Shekeyla! I am curious to know if BCG is building these capabilities from ground up or acquiring companies with existing capabilities? Also, what is the value add doing it inhouse vs outsourcing data capabilities to help the client?

Fascinating analysis Omar! I’d be curious to know if Tinder is changing its strategy in the face of strong competition from other dating apps (specifically Bumble) and if it is branching out into other segments such as Bumble BFF.

Great post Max! It is good to know how much Zeel has scaled in a short period. I would be curious to know who you think are a bigger threat to them – local salons who start allowing online bookings (given this sector has local network clustering) or larger personal care startups.

Great post Kanako! Kickstarter is truly democratizing entrepreneurship while at the same time providing opportunity to small investors participate in the upside. I would be curious to know if disintermediation is a risk to Kickstarter’s model.

I agree! But I do see future consolidations and focus on efficiencies. Thanks!

On March 2, 2021, Surabhi commented on DoorDash: Winning the restaurant food delivery war? :

Thanks for your comment Kyle. Yes, I do believe that market leaders in food delivery will move to adjacent businesses (grocery delivery being the lowest hanging fruit as it uses more or less the same operational infrastructure). It may be more about defending their turf from incumbents (Instacart, Amazon etc) than ambition to grow. It looks like the adjacent sectors might be consolidating with logistical efficiency being the primary advantage. I would be curious to see if Amazon would enter this space and delivery workers would move from multi-homing to just having a separate delivery platform. Interesting idea!
As mentioned by Max, DoorDash also seems to be moving in food preparation which can help improve their bottom line.

On March 2, 2021, Surabhi commented on DoorDash: Winning the restaurant food delivery war? :

Thanks for sharing that Omar. Yes, DoorDash also uses extensive promotions – free or subsidized memberships, free delivery, $$ off on minimum order value etc. However, I have rarely seen promotions of the order of 40%. I found this article as a good comparative of prices across platforms https://www.moneyunder30.com/food-delivery-comparison. I also hope that the sector either consolidates or re-structures to protect interests of delivery workers and local restaurants.

Ah, I did not know that. Thank you for sharing Max. I do know some of my friends have started using automated food preparation services. Fascinating!
