Great post! Waze actually demonstrates direct network effects (with more users and more data, routes and time estimates become more accurate). It’s interesting how Waze used gamification to build a critical mass of users. What’s more interesting though is that Google has decided to maintain Waze independently from Google maps. As far as I am aware, there is very little data shared between Waze and Google (some of the incident reports are shared with Google Maps and Waze leverages search from Google maps, if I’m not mistaken). It will be interesting to see whether they continue operating this way going forward.

Great post! Some of the case studies seem very interesting and useful for their users. It seems like this tool is primarily used by small businesses. In that case, do you have a sense of the retention rate that Optimizely sees?

Great article. I agree with the comment above. There is a trade off between leveraging network effect and getting more people on the platform to improve choices for each user, and curating potential matches to reduce irrelevant matches. That said, I think there is value in providing some sense of control to the user, like tinder aims to do as opposed to some platforms that say show only a single match on a given day. But reducing the signal to noise ratio will be the biggest concern for tinder

Great article! I find myself searching for a Starbucks for wifi every now and then. My only concerns around this strategy are wrt who they consider themselves competing against and how defensible these tactics are in that battle.
