{"id":24211,"date":"2017-11-15T17:18:38","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T22:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/a-heifer-sized-problem-for-tyson-foods\/"},"modified":"2017-11-15T17:18:38","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T22:18:38","slug":"a-heifer-sized-problem-for-tyson-foods","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/a-heifer-sized-problem-for-tyson-foods\/","title":{"rendered":"A Heifer Sized Problem for Tyson Foods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><u>What\u2019s the Problem?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Americans consumed 24.8bn pounds of beef in 2015<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a>, and while those dishes may have been delicious, beef has a dark side and is a core culprit impacting climate change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions: <\/em><\/strong>According to The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), beef production accounts for 41% of the 7.1 gigatonnes of CO<sub>2 <\/sub>equivalent emissions produced annually by the livestock sector. Of this, feed production, processing and transport account for ~45% of total emissions, 39% are due to outputs of greenhouse gases (GHG) during digestion by cows, and 10% is attributable to manure decomposition<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Resource consumption:<\/em><\/strong> According to the WWF, significant amounts of water are used to grow feed, and &gt;66% of the world\u2019s agricultural land is used to raise cattle, more than all other domesticated animals and crops combined<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a>.\u00a0 Furthermore, the WWF discloses that each year, a rainforest area larger than New York State is destroyed to create grazing land<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[iv]<\/a>.\u00a0 The overgrazing and the use of land to grow feed is a key contributor to soil erosion<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[v]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Pollution: <\/em><\/strong>The improper treatment of cattle production waste leads to pollution of the earth\u2019s finite water resources, and improper grazing management results in sediment which contaminates surface water and groundwater<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">[vi]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Demand for beef is expected to increase as income levels rise and the global population grows to exceed 9bn by 2050<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[vii]<\/a>.\u00a0 As the largest US fed beef packer, with beef accounting for 38% of the Company\u2019s $37bn in sales for 2016<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[viii]<\/a>, Tyson Foods should be focused on solutions to achieve its mission to \u201c<em>sustainably feed the world with the fastest growing portfolio of protein packed brands\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[i<\/a><a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">x<\/a><em><a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\"><\/a><\/em><a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Figure 1. Investor Presentation (September 2017)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>So, What\u2019s Tyson Doing?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tyson has been careless.\u00a0 In 2016, Tyson was accused of dumping &gt;104mm pounds of pollutants in waterways from 2010-2014, which is more than Cargill, Koch Industries, and ExxonMobil combined<a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[xi]<\/a>.\u00a0 In 2017, Tyson agreed to pay a $2mm criminal fine and pay $0.5mm to clean up impacted water in Missouri, where the Company released animal feed into a city wastewater treatment system<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[xii]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tyson has been trying to clean up its act:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions: <\/em><\/strong>Tyson measures CO<sub>2 <\/sub>equivalent emissions annually, and is reducing transport miles, using recyclable packaging materials, and investing in upgrades across its facilities to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Tyson is also using renewable fuels, e.g., by implementing covered wastewater treatment lagoons at six production locations to capture biogas for use as a renewable energy source<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">[xiii]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Resource consumption:<\/em><\/strong> In 2016, Tyson began installing new measuring\/monitoring equipment in US plants so employees could manage water use in real-time, with the goal of reducing the amount of water used to produce each pound of product by 12% by the end of 2020, using 2015 as a base year.\u00a0 \u00a0The Company also used more than 2bn gallons of wastewater for irrigation across their plants<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">[xiv]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Pollution:<\/em><\/strong> Tyson has implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) across its 12 plants, which have all achieved at least Tier 3 recognition<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\">[xv]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Is That Enough?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definitely not.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Clearer reporting: <\/strong>Tyson has not set quantifiable targets and timelines for each of its goals, which diminishes the Company\u2019s accountability. Furthermore, Tyson aggregates its results across all three products (poultry, beef and pork), and across the entire supply chain, so that efficiencies for a subgroup (e.g., beef) cannot be clearly monitored.\u00a0 If Tyson is serious about sustainability, it needs to be more transparent in both its goals and its reporting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sustainable sourcing: <\/strong>According to the FAO, improving efficiencies and implementing best practices at the herd level can markedly reduce GHG emissions (e.g., better feeding can reduce methane released during digestion and nitrous oxide released by decomposing manure)<a href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\">[xvi]<\/a>.\u00a0 Tyson purchases its cattle from independent\u00a0feed\u00a0yards, public auctions, and the\u00a0spot market<a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\">[xvii]<\/a>, and needs to take greater responsibility for ensuring its suppliers implement best practices.\u00a0 Tyson should go so far as to implement practices similar to the \u201cSustainable Ranching Initiative\u201d undertaken by the WWF, which collaborates with ranchers \u201c<em>to identify and accelerate the use of more ecological and economically sustainable management practices<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn18\" name=\"_ednref18\">[xviii]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plant based protein: <\/strong>In 2016, Tyson acquired a 5% stake in plant-based protein company Beyond Meat for an undisclosed amount<a href=\"#_edn19\" name=\"_ednref19\">[xix]<\/a>, but spent $4.2bn in 2017 to acquire the animal-protein focused AdvancePierre Foods<a href=\"#_edn20\" name=\"_ednref20\">[xx]<\/a>.\u00a0 Tyson needs to invest more in plant based protein.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Enforcing best practices at the beginning of the cattle supply chain is critical to sustainable production.\u00a0 Considering Tyson\u2019s mission statement and significant purchasing power, shouldn\u2019t Tyson be held responsible for implementing standards for its suppliers adhere to, and helping them achieve these standards?
