J&amp;J\u2019s CEO, Alex Gorsky, joined President Obama and other leaders to discuss the impacts large corporations can have on the environment [3].\u00a0 J&amp;J has already made significant strides by focusing on critical aspects of the business and implementing challenging goals both in the short and long term.\u00a0 The question is whether the progress they have made is enough, and if they can continue to fund these expensive improvement projects while new taxes to medical technology manufacturers are unlikely to go away anytime soon [10].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/img1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12149\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/img1-300x100.jpg\" alt=\"img1\" width=\"336\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/img1-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/img1-768x255.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/img1-600x199.jpg 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/img1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Emissions Relative to Sales Revenue [2]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Current Focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Buildings and Facilities<\/strong>: J&amp;J has committed to a 20% reduction of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions by 2020 compared to its 2010 Baseline.\u00a0 In 2012 it had already reached a 6.1% reduction of emissions against its baseline at the same time realizing a 3.4% increase in sales.\u00a0 Management understands that committing to such rapid improvement presents a significant challenge and accordingly has allocated a $40 million annual budget for projects relating to energy and greenhouse gas emissions [1].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/2-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12160 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/2-9-284x300.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"284\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/2-9-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/2-9.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Facility Emissions Data from all J&amp;J Sites over 50,000 square feet [1]<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elimination of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)<\/strong>: J&amp;J realizing the impacts CFCs can have on the ozone has eliminated CFCs and replaced these with a less harmful alternative (HCFCs) while continuing to look for even further improved technologies for its facilitates [2].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transportation &amp; Shipping<\/strong>: J&amp;J set a <em>Healthy Future 2015<\/em> goal to realize a 20% improvement in its fleet emissions. This is a significant amount considering its massive fleet of 28,000 owned or leased fleet of vehicles [1]. J&amp;J manages 100 percent of shipments for its products within North America.\u00a0 They have worked with their supply chain and logistics teams to make improvements outside of simply buying more fuel-efficient trucks. \u00a0Several projects have been undertaken to use multi-compartment trailers, improve freight consolidation, reduce dead miles, and engage in cross-shipper moves with other companies transporting similar products [1].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/3-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12163 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/3-6-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/3-6-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/3-6.jpg 456w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Employee Travel and Sales Fleet CO<sub>2<\/sub> Emissions [1]<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shift to renewable energies<\/strong>: By far the boldest commitment the J&amp;J team has made is to produce or procure 20% of electricity from clean\/renewable sources by 2020 and aspire to be 100% renewable by 2050. This was announced in the <em>Citizenship &amp; Sustainability 2020<\/em> goals, amongst a broader set of initiatives including items such as having all new buildings be built to LEED standards [3,4].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is this enough, and what should J&amp;J Focus moving forward? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the initiatives presented earlier place a huge cost burden to the business with no immediate benefits unlike other industries such as agriculture or automotive companies which must build their product around specific emissions standards.\u00a0 J&amp;J as a large healthcare company is in the spot light with multiple pressures both to price its products fairly and ethically and manufacture its goods in an environmentally friendly way.\u00a0 This puts a lot of stress on a company that is competing with flourishing new companies stationed in countries with minimal IP enforcement and significantly fewer carbon regulations. \u00a0J&amp;J must build into its products at conception a low-cost structure and a low carbon footprint design to stay competitive on all fronts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Product life cycle\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0impact<\/strong>: J&amp;J should evaluate the total carbon emission of a product\u2019s life starting from it being manufactured, transported, consumed, and finally ending when it is discarded. This involves analysis to improve packaging and reducing shipping resources needed, in addition to the logistical improvements already made to reduce shipping CO<sub>2<\/sub> Johnson and Johnson has already started some work related to this involving renewable product packaging [8].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supplying medical supplies to natural disaster sites<\/strong>: The J&amp;J team should also think about how to supply medical supplies and first aid care to catastrophic natural disasters as their occurrence is increasing due to climate change.\u00a0 Just in the past year there have been numerous floods and hurricanes displacing millions of people and injuring them in the process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Predict new health trends<\/strong>: Unfortunately, with changing climates (specifically increasing temperatures and increased CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentrations) there are several new health conditions which are increasing.
