{"id":11690,"date":"2016-11-04T15:11:57","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T19:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/the-hotel-industrys-roadmap-to-solving-diminishing-water-supply\/"},"modified":"2016-11-04T15:11:57","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T19:11:57","slug":"the-hotel-industrys-roadmap-to-solving-diminishing-water-supply","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/the-hotel-industrys-roadmap-to-solving-diminishing-water-supply\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hotel Industry\u2019s Roadmap to Solving Diminishing Water Supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Urgency of Water Management &amp; The Hotel Industry\u2019s Roadmap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Economic Forum determined water supply is one of the top global risks over the next decade due to impacts of climate change.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> United Nations predicts a 40% water supply shortfall <strong>globally<\/strong> by 2030.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hotels account for about 15% of total water use in the U.S. commercial sector<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> and, that water use, accounts for ~11% of their operating expenses.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hotel industry has proven the economic viability of reducing water consumption and has provided a road map for other commercial and residential properties to reduce their water footprint.<\/p>\n<p><strong>InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) as a Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the Water Footprint Network, IHG recently completed the industry\u2019s most comprehensive water risk-assessment. In 2013, IHG announced it would reduce water consumption per occupied room in water stressed areas by 12% compared to 2012 levels by 2017.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> Its Green Engage System allows its hotels to track, measure and report on water use<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a> and offers over 200 Green Solutions. As of 2015, this initiative has caused a 5% decrease.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> Based on hotel level data, 1% of water savings can equate to approximately $5,000 of savings on the bottom-line providing a meaningful financial incentive.<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>IHG Initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Green Engage System suggests many operational changes that IHG hotels have been able to successfully roll out:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In 2014, after sever drought in California, IHG sent toolkits to equip hotels with <u>aerators<\/u> to minimize the water flow in faucets. Water use per occupied room decreased 10% and six underwent a complete bathroom renovation (~2.4 million gallons of annual water savved).<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a> These kits are being rolled out to 50 additional properties.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>InterContinental San Francisco saves about 2 million gallons of water a year with aerators, <u>back-of-house water restriction features<\/u>, and a <u>sustainable HVAC cooling water treatment<\/u> (~1 million gallons of water saved per year).<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Crowne Plaza San Diego is almost 100% below IHG\u2019s benchmark utilizing aerators and <u>timers on water appliances<\/u>.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Next Steps on Water Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My recommendations on next steps focus on the highest sources of water use in hotels:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-04-at-7.37.34-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11670\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-04-at-7.37.34-AM-300x171.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-11-04-at-7-37-34-am\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-04-at-7.37.34-AM-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-04-at-7.37.34-AM-768x437.png 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-04-at-7.37.34-AM-600x342.png 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-04-at-7.37.34-AM.png 920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Guest Rooms &amp; Bedrooms (30%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold all hotels accountable to enacting <u>universally adaptable operational initiatives<\/u> such as aerators on faucets (~7 million gallons annual water saved<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]<\/a>) and waterless urinals (saving half a million gallons of water annually<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><u>Involve guests<\/u>. For example, linen and towel reuse programs reduce loads of laundry by 17%.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a> Incentivize compliance with hotels\u2019 loyalty programs or something simple such as a free movie on demand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Laundry System (16%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>P&amp;G\u2019s Tide Professional Coldwater Laundry System low cost solution can <u>reduce the water used in the washer<\/u> by up to 40% and the energy needed to heat the water by 75%.<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Kitchen System (14%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Granuldisk\u2019s pot and pan washing machine enables <u>90% less water use than any other pot washing methods<\/u>. The London Heathrow Marriot Hotel is saving 2 million liters of water annually from this.<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cooling &amp; Heating (12%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Universal installation of the HVAC systems that were successful at InterContinental San Francisco.<\/li>\n<li>Rollout improved hot water heating systems, comprising a third of energy costs for hotels,<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\">[19]<\/a> utilizing A.O. Smith\u2019s energy efficient water heaters that payback in a few years (through the energy cost savings) and limit water waste.<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\">[20]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The financial incentive for hotels to minimize their water use has led them to be innovators in this space. The commercial sector (i.e. offices, hospitals, restaurants) is the second largest consumer of publicly supplied water in the U.S. at 17%.<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\">[21]<\/a> This sector can and should (at least for financial reasons!) follow a similar roadmap enabling them to reduce water usage by at least 15% and subsequently energy usage by 10%.<a href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\">[22]<\/a> A bigger problem is today, most residents do not feel the burden of the cost of waters<a href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\">[23]<\/a> like commercial entities do, but they account for 57% of water consumption.<a href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\">[24]<\/a> <u>With hotels providing a roadmap for how to make homes more water efficient, we now need the regulation or government funded incentive programs to make this a priority.
