The tension between upsides and downsides of machine learning seems to be a never-ending debate. Although these data analytics have potential to deliver superb customer satisfactions as well as create social good, individual privacy seems to be an issue that many people started to pay more attention into. During the past few years I started to realized that many of my friends in Thailand have decided to stop allowing social media application or companies to gain access into their private information, with some decided to retire from playing facebook. The issue of trust will be the big concern in the future among the user-of-private-information industry. If such trust issue is not resolved, I doubt that there could be only garbage information left available in the market.
Use of data collected from telematics with machine learning to customize insurance premium for customer seems viable and could be the future of overall insurance industry. However, I believe there are several issues that may need to be addressed.
1. Which party “AXA or customer” should be the one to bear cost of telematic?
2. Placing telematic to track customer car usage may create tension on privacy of individuals
3. As customers in the insurance industry usually a price-sensitive consumer, the use of machine learning may not create an edge for AXA, since the business will likely flow to provider of the lowest premium.
As a music lover, the music streaming industry has made my life much more enjoyable. Since the music is the same across different streaming provider, user experience is probably the only way (apart from lifetime free subscription) to capture and retain customer. One of the biggest pain point of music lover is to pick the song that align with the mood and tone of user’s current stage and machine learning to help user pick the song sounds so wonderful. I also agree that customer data analytics can help companies whether Spotify, Apple, or Netflix to provide far better customer experience, but at the same time letting these companies know me better than my best friends or even myself sounds a bit bizarre. I am not quite sure about the future of the big data due to the prevailing tension between customized consumer experience and potential threat.
Concussions seems common for a physically contact sport as American football. One potential reason for the low awareness is that the impact of concussion usually arises long time after the player retired. Therefore, normal method of raising awareness of concussion among hot-blood young NFL player seems to be useless. I agree that NFL should be the governing body to take full responsibility in coping with this issue; not only apply strict football rules regarding concussion, but also promote high quality and standard for player’s equipment. The crowdsourcing idea on helmet development is a really nice way to kick this campaign off.
3D Printing has potential to play significant role in global healthcare sector, especially in orthopedic surgery. Customization of implant bone, tissue, or even joints can be undertaking and therefore improve quality of life for patients after the treatment. However, even though cost of 3D printing has gone down significantly in accordance with the technology improvement, the cost of 3D printing in healthcare is unlikely to follow the trend. Considered as matter of life and death for patients, the printed bones or tissue required close attention from orthopedists and specialists which therefore driven up the cost. It seems an on-going debate with never-ending solution when it comes to tension between advance healthcare technology and cost to patients.
