Combining the themes from the last two prompts, in a digital era in which we face ongoing threats from climate change, do you think HBS should default to printing out all our RC cases for us and filling up our mailboxes, given the negative environmental impact of wasting paper?

By cutting out the costs of default RC case printing, HBS could increase profitability and then reinvest those profits in increasing the digital offerings of the school. [1]

On November 21, 2016, Charlie J commented on New York Times… “trading analog dollars for digital pennies” :

Interestingly, recent research has indicated that the massive amounts of capital that have been invested into building out the digital offerings of print newspaper businesses has been a complete waste of money. [1] According to their research, of the top 51 newspapers, “Few of [their websites] have experienced any growth since 2007, the point at which the online versions had been available for about a decade, making it a mature product. In fact, more than half have lost online readers since 2011” [2]. Sadly, it seems that most readers are transitioning from reading print papers to getting their news from online new aggregators. According to a 2012 Pew Study, “26 percent of respondents cited Yahoo as a news source they used most often; 17 percent named Google, with 11 percent naming MSN.com”. [3]

Given the past returns on capital invested in building out newspapers’ digital presence, what reasons do we have to believe that future investments in newspaper’s digital strategy will be positive?

Do you think Silk Road 3.0 really if net good society? If the net public health benefits of Silk Road 3.0 do become clearer, what do you think should be the government’s role going forward in legalizing the online retailing of drugs?

Is the ongoing legalization of drugs such as marijuana good or bad for Silk Road 3.0’s business model going forward? [1]

On November 20, 2016, Charlie J commented on How Technology (and Scotch) is Transforming the Way Men Buy Suits :

Alton Lane’s 3D technology for custom fitting suits certainly sounds very disruptive in theory. However, there are many who would argue that their 3D technology is mostly hype and that it will never be able to deliver a better fitting suit than a good tailor.

In my personal experience visiting their NYC fitting location and in the experience of many others it has been the case that their suits have not fit as well as promised. [1]

Do you think this underperformance is just a temporary blip and it’s just a matter of time for them to get their 3D technology right for all customers or will this type of technology always only work for a certain subset of customers?

On November 7, 2016, Charlie J commented on Exxon Mobil and the public showdown! :

What metrics would you suggest we use to measure whether Exxon Mobil has done a good job in addressing the potential threats and implications of climate change?

Without better disclosure to the public and shareholders quantifying the impact of some of their environmental initiatives, I find it difficult to evaluate how much they are really doing to save the environment compared with the damage they are doing with core business of extracting and selling oil.

How do you think Google can justify its significant investments in Sustainability initiatives?

It is a recruiting tactic for attracting the best engineering talent in the world? Is it another example of one of their moonshot bets? Or is it rather a shrewd tactic for portraying a good public image so that consumers and governments are distracted from its monopolistic practices and privacy-invasive policies?

On November 7, 2016, Charlie J commented on The Parent Company of Fox News Cares A Lot About Global Warming :

Overall, these initiatives seem fairly unimpressive compared to the initiatives of most other companies. Do you think 21st Century Fox is just pursuing these initiatives to “check the box” or do they truly believe in these initiatives?

After years of Fox News ardently supporting climate change deniers like Trump, it seems like a fitting punishment for their viewership to be split in two when Trump inevitably starts his own competing conservative-leaning media business.

Thanks for teasing out all the ways in which Maker’s Mark is pursuing sustainable initiatives. Even though I frequently find myself imbibing their delicious concoctions, I had no idea they supported any sustainability related causes.

To get economic value from their investments in sustainability, how do you think they can better market these initiatives of theirs to consumers?

Great post AVP!

In addition to the above mentioned initiatives, has Shake Shack done anything to encourage their beef suppliers to enact initiatives aimed at reducing the methane emissions from cows?

One possibility would be for them to get their suppliers to implement the recommendations of a recent study conducted by Welch scientists, which found that feeding cows garlic can reduce their methane emissions by as much as 50%: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/mid_/6288012.stm
