\nOn average, we believe that students want to avoid the \u201cDisappointed\u201d photo on the left, and experience the \u201cHappy\u201d photo on the right.<\/p>\n

(Some could also argue that this slide sums up the entire HBAP Student Educational Experience.)<\/p>\n

The bottom line is you\u2019re sweatin\u2019 bullets in the Hot Seat, the class debates are engaging, the material is challenging, you are 100% \u201con the record\u201d for what you say, and on average, everyone\u2019s adrenaline is pumping through their veins!<\/p>\n

And, that\u2019s<\/em> an opportunity!<\/p>\n

Instead of being left all alone after class\u2026 what if there was something else?
\nWhat if students could get more out of their education investment?
\nWhat if everyone could experience something as equally enriching as the Live Session?<\/p>\n

And since April 2020, this is what we\u2019ve been doing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been hanging out after <\/span>every<\/span><\/i> class, and calling it, \u201cOVERTIME<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

And unlike the Live Sessions and Peer Learning, it\u2019s <\/span>NOT<\/b> recorded.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • OVERTIME<\/strong> has been held after every one of Todd\u2019s Live Sessions since April 2020.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 63% of Todd\u2019s HBAP Professors have come to an OVERTIME, <\/strong>or hung out after the Live Session.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • On average, 38% of the students in each class joins OVERTIME<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The average OVERTIME<\/strong> runs for 90 minutes after class.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Coming to OVERTIME<\/strong> costs just a little bit of your time\u2026 and the payoff is <\/span>massive<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    We believe that this experience has led to a greater connection to the program and to our fellow students, manifesting in ongoing discussions of class topics, real world startups, and job opportunities.<\/p>\n

    On a scale from 1-10, with a 10 being the highest, how important is your Personal Network to your future Career?
    \nNow ask yourself, why didn\u2019t you pick a lower number?<\/p>\n

    I believe the answer is because there is a high likelihood<\/em> that your next job is going to come from someone that you already know.
    \nSo, if you want to level up<\/em>, then it\u2019s absolutely vital that you know them<\/em>, and they know you<\/em>.\u00a0 It’s those connections<\/em> that are born in OVERTIME<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Now, today we\u2019re \u201cstudent organized\u201d. Which means one of us posts a link in our Class Slack channels, makes announcements during the Live Sessions and Peer Learning, tries to encourage participation, and asks the Professors if they\u2019d like to come hang out for a little while after class to get to know us better.<\/p>\n

    So\u2026 It\u2019s not exactly \u201cfriction free\u201d.<\/p>\n

    With a very small nudge HBAP could embrace this Cultural Change that has the potential to strengthen our community, grow our personal friendships and bonds, and propel HBAP beyond what everyone else<\/em> thinks we are capable of.<\/p>\n

    What we want to do is to make it easier<\/em> to join OVERTIME<\/strong>.
    \nWe need to reduce friction, and make it an opt-in part of everything<\/em> at HBAP.
    \nThe goal is to have OVERTIME<\/strong> become a part of our culture.<\/p>\n

    One way to do this is to add the \u201cBlue Button\u201d to 2HU, and it shows up automatically after every Live Session.<\/p>\n

    Another idea: What about an \u201calways open\u201d Zoom Meeting with lots of Breakout Rooms? Kind of like a 24\/7 Virtual University Center\u2026 just no restaurants.\u00a0 This type of Virtual Social Space could, in addition to being an after-class meetup location, help facilitate more cross-cohort interactions.<\/p>\n

    We\u2019ll still need the marketing and some cheerleading… but if it\u2019s easier for people to join, then the internal Direct Network Effects* will be easier to realize.<\/p>\n

    * Direct Network Effects occur when increases in platform usage lead to direct increases in value.\u00a0 Indirect Network Effects occur when increases in product usage spawns the production of increasingly valuable complementary goods, and this results in an increase in the value of the original product.<\/h6>\n

    Today we\u2019re working to grow the HBAP Community and increase student engagement, both during the program and after graduation.<\/p>\n

    Some examples and ideas include:
    \nHBAP\u2502STARTUPS<\/strong>: Our goal is to help HBAPers learn about starting businesses. This is open to all HBAP Students and Alumni.
    \nHBAP\u2502ALUMNI<\/strong>: We are planning to organize a formal HBAP Alumni group that will help provide events, networking, and job support.
    \nHBAP\u2502BOOK CLUB<\/strong>: Apparently, some of us like to read. (I don\u2019t know who these people are.)
    \nHBAP\u2502REVIEW<\/strong>: A new experiment that Pam Groen came up with is to host a formal 8+ week HBAP | REVIEW<\/strong> workshop where Alumni will meet weekly to review and reinforce the Key Concepts of the entire HBAP curriculum. The first HBAP | REVIEW<\/strong> Workshop will begin in January, and if we are successful, we will work to make this a regular part of HBAP.
    \nHBAP | 360 FEEDBACK<\/strong>: How can we help ourselves become the best people we can be? Throughout the process of hosting OVERTIME<\/strong>, I\u2019ve learned about myself and things I want to work on to become the best leader I can be. We think we can scale this in a way that\u2019s positive, self-initiated, and optional, for everyone.<\/p>\n

    We\u2019re also looking to host OVERTIME<\/strong> after every Webinar, Workshop, Tech Talk, & Forum. It offers the community the ability to continue the conversation and engage.<\/p>\n

    These are some examples of ideas that have either grown out of OVERTIME<\/strong>, or would benefit from OVERTIME<\/strong>. #IndirectNetworkEffects<\/p>\n

    Well, it turns out that we\u2019ve managed to collect some rather compelling data since we started hosting OVERTIME in April, 2020.<\/p>\n

    This graph shows the OVERTIME<\/strong> participation trends for each of Todd\u2019s classes and seminars.<\/p>\n

    Notice how Duration increases within each Class. #momentum #traction<\/p>\n

    That horizontal dotted line at the 60 minute mark is important.\u00a0 The average OVERTIME<\/strong> duration lasts over 1 hour after<\/em> the Live Session ended.\u00a0 Of course, not everyone sticks around every night for the entire<\/em> OVERTIME<\/strong>, but this graph represents the time that’s invested by the Students, Professors, and Teaching Fellows that is above and beyond the design of the original HBAP program.<\/p>\n

    Note: The data is taken from Zoom Meeting logs, and is shown for Todd\u2019s post-class OVERTIME<\/strong> only. Other events such as Immersion, Workshops, Office Hours, HBAP Forum, LISH webinars, etc. are not included.<\/p>\n

    What\u2019s with the upside-down \u201cU\u201d trend?
    \nLooking at the attendance data across all Terms there is an interesting downward trend in the later Class Terms.<\/p>\n

    Despite the majority of OVERTIME<\/strong> meetups lasting longer than 1 hour, I believe that the downward trend in the fall months can be explained by a resistance to the cultural shift within the HBAP community. Many students in the earlier cohorts were well-established in the pre-OVERTIME<\/strong> culture and were not accustomed to sticking around or socializing after the Live Sessions ended.<\/p>\n

    At the beginning of each Term, there were only a few students attending each class who had ever heard of OVERTIME<\/strong>. It took greater effort to market the OVERTIME<\/strong> concept and entice students from earlier cohorts to change their behavior and hangout after class.<\/p>\n

    Looking at \u201clater cohorts\u201d (HBAP Cohorts # 7, 8, and 9), once accustomed to the OVERTIME<\/strong> culture and value, it\u2019s easier to see the significant growth in both the number of attendees and the total duration.<\/p>\n
