win may be remembered more for having finally busted one of the most frustrating myths in the NFL:\u00a0 punting on 4th-down is the safe, conservative choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background on 4th-downs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In American football, teams have four chances (or \u201cdowns\u201d) to either score points or advance the football ten yards down the field.\u00a0 If a team fails on its 4th-down, then the opposing teams takes possession of the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Because coaches don\u2019t want to set up their opponents for an easy score, NFL wisdom says a team should intentionally turn the football over on 4th-down by kicking (\u201cpunting\u201d) it down the field.\u00a0 Similarly, if a team is in range of kicking a 3-point field goal on 4th-down, NFL wisdom says they should kick the field goal, rather than go for a 1st-down and risk losing possession.<\/p>\n<p>For years, data analysts have decried NFL coaches for punting or kicking field goals on 4th-down. <a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0 Half of all NFL plays gain four or more yards, so \u201cconversion is more likely than not.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7641\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches-300x144.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"967\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches-768x369.png 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches-1024x492.png 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches-600x288.png 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/4th-Down-Bot-vs.-NFL-Coaches.png 1340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/winning-the-super-data-bowl-eagles-fly-on-4th-downs\/edit\">NY Times<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Eagles create value by embracing 4th-down conversion analytics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the surface, the Eagles attempted more 4th-down conversions (29) than any other NFL team in the 2017 football season, and successfully converted 69% (20). <a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[6]<\/a>\u00a0 However, a closer look at the Eagles&#8217; on-field operations shows that data analytics have become deeply woven into game prep and real-time decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Even before Super Bowl LII, sports commentators acknowledged the Eagles&#8217; analytics edge on the field.\u00a0 In January 2018, ESPN wrote how the Eagles&#8217; approach to analytics is &#8220;so involved\u00a0in the operation that two members of the department . . . communicate with Pederson in-game.\u201d <a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 Once a 3rd-down call is made, but before the 3rd-down ball is snapped, the data analytics team will run a model based on inputs like field position, number of yards needed for conversion, and\u00a0game time remaining.\u00a0\u00a0Usually, before the third down snap, they\u2019ll deliver a concise message to Coach Pederson: &#8220;If it&#8217;s anything less than 4th-and-<em>N<\/em>, the charts say go for it.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[8]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Eagles also use data to implement real-time adaptive defense<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Eagles aren&#8217;t only using data on offense.\u00a0 Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has invented ways to share his love of analytics with the Eagles defense.\u00a0 &#8220;Each week there&#8217;s a PowerPoint presentation on how many possible plays an offense can run based on time, number of timeouts, and a kicker&#8217;s maximum field goal length,&#8221; and Schwartz gives briefings that &#8220;are detailed down to the yard, personnel, formation, and more.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[9]<\/a>\u00a0 Schwartz frequently gives defensive player statistical pop quizzes, which inculcates situational propensities that can be quickly recalled on the field.\u00a0 Many Eagles credit Schwartz&#8217;s heat maps (color-coded graphics showing play tendencies) and relentless quizzing for the defense&#8217;s ability to narrow down the options available to the Atlanta Falcons on their final attempt of the game, which led the Eagles to their first playoff win.\u00a0<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>But the NFL is a &#8220;copycat league&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NFL coaches are constantly searching for a competitive edge, which is why the NFL is notorious for being a &#8220;copycat league&#8221;.\u00a0 Thus any edge the Eagles have from analytics is likely not defensible beyond 1-2 seasons.\u00a0 But embracing data requires buy-in from both team ownership <em>and<\/em> the head coach, which could delay the adoption of analytics by other NFL teams.\u00a0<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So will 4th-down conversions become more frequent?\u00a0 Probably, so long as data keeps indicating that punting is the real &#8220;risky&#8221;
