In an<br \/>industry with so much jargon, is there any room for a platform business?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:post-content --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>BlockEnergy hopes so. Their business model is simple: act as a platform<br \/>between homeowners or communities willing to have solar installed on their<br \/>roof, and utility companies who want to provide reliable and clean energy to<br \/>their customers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Value Creation for Homeowners<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>BlockEnergy facilitates this connection in a unique way, underpinned by<br \/>three facets of their business model:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>1.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>BlockEnergy coordinates with homeowners, community<br \/>boards or developers to initiate rooftop installation of <span>\u00a0<\/span>solar panels and installation of BlockBox.BlockBox acts as a household battery, an AC\/DC converter, and a data sensor for<br \/>the house it is installed at.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>2.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span>In communities with at most 50 BlockBoxes, BlockEnergy<br \/>installs a Community Battery system, which stores energy generated by the solar<br \/>panels in that community beyond what is stored in each households battery<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>3.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>All additional energy is fed into the power grid run by<br \/>the local utility. Any energy needs not met by the Solar PVs or batteries is<br \/>supplied as usual from the grid.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16757\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2-1024x584.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2-1024x584.png 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2-768x438.png 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2-600x342.png 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another unique aspect of this concept of a \u201cmicrogrid platform\u201d is that all<br \/>the assets are owned and operated by the local utilities. The homeowners or<br \/>developers don\u2019t pay for the solar panels or BlockBoxes; the installation and<br \/>maintenance is paid and insured by the local utility, and the homeowners pay<br \/>for electricity at a rate comparable to other customers.<\/p>\n<p>However, they benefit from having increased energy reliability due to having<br \/>a household and community battery. This means that if one part of the microgrid<br \/>is not generating solar due to cloudy conditions, they are still able to use<br \/>solar energy supplied by the community grid. Similarly, one households<br \/>generation could<span>\u00a0 <\/span>subsidize another<br \/>households consumption due to differences in production and demand.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span>The company Vice President describes the value proposition as \u201csecure energy as a service with renewables, resiliency, controls and real-time data\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span><!-- [if !supportFootnotes]--><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">[1]<\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/span><\/a>.The BlockBox data provided to the homeowner contains information related to their battery and community batter level, or as detailed as energy usage per appliance, since each appliance has a unique energy signature. This enables homeowners to make <span>\u00a0<\/span>decisions around how much they use certain appliances or when to upgrade to an energy-smart appliance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16758\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1-600x337.png 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/blog_1.png 1919w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Value Creation for Utilities<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Local utilities capture the value of BlockEnergy through three streams:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>1.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Local utilities build out their solar capacity and have<br \/>more power going into the grid<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>2.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>They increase their battery storage capacity in<br \/>neighborhoods directly benefitting from increased storage<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>3.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>They capture all data collected from the BlockBoxes with<br \/>near real-time monitoring, enabling them to determine when it is best from a<br \/>cost perspective to have energy supplied from solar, or to draw from batteries,<br \/>or to supply traditional grid energy<\/p>\n<p>The utilities also benefit by the decentralized generation and storage in a<br \/>few tactical ways; namely, a small scale battery failure at a household level<br \/>is much less a threat to energy reliability than a largescale battery failure<br \/>at a mega-storage facility. Additionally, they benefit by increasing their<br \/>renewable generation if the utility has committed to certain renewable targets.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Scalability and Sustainability<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While same side network effects for community members is large (i.e. more<br \/>solar on roofs means more full batteries, resulting in more reliable power), it\u2019s<br \/>not clear that any same side network effects exist for the utility side, unless<br \/>neighboring local utilities can create trading contracts to increase<br \/>reliability for both.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, cross side network effects benefit utilities, since the more<br \/>roofs they have solar installed on, the more energy they are able to produce.<br \/>However, since in many parts of the US there is only one option of utility company,<br \/>the consumer does not benefit from their being many utility companies using<br \/>BlockEnergy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these disjointed network effects, the scalability of this<br \/>business model may be limited by three factors:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>1.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Prohibitive economics for solar installation and maintenance<br \/>in areas where solar is not cost competitive<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>2.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Competing utility interests \u2013 many utility companies are<br \/>innovating in the microgrid space, and may want to have their own \u201cBlockBox\u201d<br \/>solution instead of partnering with BlockEnergy<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in;text-indent: -.25in\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span>3.<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Change of value proposition for Solar \u2013 traditionally<br \/>installing solar panels meant a lower electricity bill.
